After visiting the Clay Castle located in the village of Porumbacu de Sus, my next stop in the Fagaras region before heading back to Sighisoara was in Avrig.
Avrig is a small town located in the southern part of Transylvania, about 30 km away from the city of Sibiu and since I mentioned the Clay Castle, it’s about 15 km away from it. Among other things, in Avrig you will find the Brukenthal Summer Palace.
The Summer Palace
Once a retreat for Transylvanian nobility, this hidden gem now invites visitors to step back in time and immerse themselves in a bygone era of opulence and charm. The building of the palace was started by the former governor of Transylvanian, Adolf Nicolaus von Bucow but the constructions were finished by Samuel von Brukenthal. The construction of the Summer Palace was inspired by two European Palaces: the Luxembourg Palace in Paris and the Schoenbrunn Palace in Vienna.
The palace takes the shape of a “U,” with the main structure housing both ancient artworks and everyday objects from the 18th century. Additionally, two wings of buildings, currently inaccessible to tourists, complete the overall design. Moreover, during the Second World War, the palace was turned into a military hospital.
The Palace Gardens
If you walk up the stairs located near the fountain, then you will have the chance to admire the entire property. In the building on the right side, you will find a nice restaurant which I highly encourage you to visit it and, of course, try some food or some a good drink.
How to reach this place?
Since Avrig is a small town it will be very easy to find this place. To visit the Brukenthal Summer Palace, you will find the entrance on Garii Street. It’s only approximately 200 meters away from the intersection with Sasilor Street.
